Sonny Petway, Director of Bands


Sonny Petway, Ph.D. is a 19-year teaching veteran of public school music, having served the past 2 years as head director at Duluth High School in Duluth, Georgia.  Prior to Duluth, he served 7 years as head director and 5 years as the assistant at McEachern High School in Cobb County, Georgia.  Before moving to Georgia, Dr. Petway was the director of bands at Dauphin Junior High School and assisted the Enterprise High School Band in Enterprise, Alabama.

Under his direction, the McEachern Bands were named Bands of America Super Regional Finalist 6 times and won numerous local marching contests around the Atlanta Metropolitan area.  In 2001 they attended the Lord Mayor of London’s New Years Day Parade in London, England and the 2006 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland.  His Wind Ensemble performed at the 2007 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, the University of Georgia January Festival and the Georgia Music Educators Conference in Savannah, Georgia.

A two-time recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, Dr. Petway is an active judge and clinician having adjudicated Festivals of Music, the Fiesta Bowl Competition and Parade, and many local marching and concert events.  As a trumpet player, Dr. Petway has performed twice at The Midwest Band and Orchestra clinic, once in 2001 with Tara Winds and again in 2002 with the Cobb Wind Symphony.

Dr. Petway received his bachelors degree in music education at The University of Southern Mississippi (1992), his masters degree from The University of Georgia (2008), and his doctorate in music education from The University of Southern Mississippi (2011).  He currently resides in Dallas, Georgia with his wife Emily and his beautiful daughter Maddy.
